Solid Modeling
While most any part can be solid modeled, the process is most often used to model consumer type
products. Objects such as cell phone housings, toys, and plastic bottles; just to name a few; lend
themselves well to being solid modeled.
For the modeling and reverse engineering of some parts, we use SolidWorks by SolidWorks
Corporation. SolidWorks allows the creation of parametric models to be based on measurement data
obtained through numerous measurement systems. Part features can be easily modeled using SolidWorks,
and can be quickly altered or updated at any time during the modeling process. Also, features such as
mold draft can be effortlessly added to the model. Since models in SolidWorks are true solids, and
thus guaranteed to be “water-tight”, they can easily be used for StereoLithography purposes. Another
benefit is that Solidworks allows the created solid to be exported into many different file formats,
including IGES, STEP, STL, parasolid, and ACIS.
