For each of the various uses, the process begins with the digitizing, or collection, of computerized
mathematical data. Most of the time the part(s) will be laser digitized,
although a combination of laser and CMM data might be used for some projects. After digitizing, the
resulting 'point cloud' data can then be worked on in reverse engineering software such as Raindrop
Geomagic's Studio, or Qualify packages. Some of our engineering services available are listed below. Please

Point Cloud - A point cloud is the end result of the laser scanning process, and the starting
point for the services below. The scanned object will now be represented by thousands of individual X,Y,Z
data points that 'lay' on the surface of the part. For an example of
a scanned object click on the image to the right.
Physical Part to CAD Model Comparison - A direct comparison between the CAD 'math model'
and the digitized points. The degree of deviation is then colorized for easy interpretation.
This is most often used for product / tooling verification.
Cross Sections - Cross sections can be 'cut' through the point cloud in any direction,
at any increment to help define the shape of the part. Usually cross sections will follow the X,Y,Z
axis system of the part. The distance between the sections will be dependant on the size of the part, and
the amount of detail the part has. For round objects, such as steering wheels, axial and radial sections
can also be 'cut'.
Surfacing / Solid Models - Surfaced or solid models can be created from the scan data to fully
define the part. Shown at right is a fully finished Class-A surface model. Some of the cross sections
that were used as reference in creating this model are shown in the image above-right. For more

Likewise, solid models are created by using cross sections and measurements taken from the point cloud as

Polygonal Meshes / STL Files - STL files can be generated from the scan data for use in rapid
prototyping machines, or for FEA analysis.
Exit Scans - Exit scans are done for the purpose of archiving a record of a part. Often this
part is a prototype such as a clay model, and great time and money has been spent to produce it. The exit
scan is a permanent record, always accessible, insurance if you will, should anything happen to the part.
