Example 20:   Springback Study of Automotive Exterior Body Panel

Problem:   The purpose of this unique job was determining the amount of ‘springback’
from different grades of steel, which were produced using varying manufacturing techniques. Because of
the size and nature of the parts, a customer-supplied fixture was used for all measurements.
Process:   The process used to achieve complete 3-Dimensonal representation of the part
incorporated laser-digitizing technology. Because the part material was so thin, non-contact measurement
was necessary for these panels. The fact that free-form surfaces covered a majority of the surface area,
laser digitizing was ideal for this job.
Solution:   Upon completion of the digitizing, the ‘point-cloud data’ was overlaid with
the CAD model using the proper datum scheme. These images are easily read and understood, showing any
distortion or ‘springback’ the part may have. From this the designer or manufacture can determine which
grades of steel, and manufacturing techniques, are ideal for these particular applications.
