Problem:   To digitize cross-sections of extruded automotive molding pieces at various
locations along the part. The part was somewhat flexible which, if not handled properly, can make a
tight tolerance difficult to maintain.
Process:   This project required the use of multiple ‘tooling’ spheres for reference.
The spheres allow multiple scans to be associated back into the same coordinate system. This allows the
physical part to be cut into pieces in order to digitize the required number of cross-sections, and
ultimately be associated back into a common coordinate system using one of our advanced CAD software
packages.
Solution:   Each digitized cross section is converted into a 2-Dimensional shape and
exported into any desired data format. The data file can then be imported into almost any mainstream CAD
software package.
