DETROIT, MI -
GKS Inspection Services, a division of
Laser Design Inc, announced that its recently-opened laser scanning and
CAD modeling office in Korea has experienced such dramatic growth that
it is already one of the largest such operations in Korea. “GKS Korea is
an important part of our strategy of becoming the global leader in the
3D laser scanning services industry,” said Armando Alonso, Vice
President of GKS. “GKS Korea enhances the scope of our worldwide reverse
engineering and CAD modeling capabilities while also giving us entry
into the Korean marketplace.”

GKS Inspection
Services Korea consists of a team of 15 highly skilled engineers based
in Seoul providing reverse engineering, inspection and prototyping
services. As part of their 3D laser scanning expertise, the company’s
engineers are highly skilled in creating surface models from the 3D scan
data which is also referred to as a “point cloud”. This process is
known as reverse engineering. GKS Korea also uses inspection software to
create a color error deviation map that clearly delineates any
variations between the as-built part and the design intent.
GKS Korea has a wide
array of equipment including a Laser Design Surveyor DS-3040 laser
scanner and a Stratasys Dimension SST 1200 for creating plastic
prototypes.
Ki Seop Shim, General Manager for GKS Korea
is a mechanical engineering graduate with 7 years of industrial
experience. Shim has extensive experience in reverse engineering both
interior and exterior automotive components, as well as inspection for
injection molds. Kil Ho Jeong and Kyung
Ha Lee, Team Leaders for GKS Korea, are mechanical engineering
graduates. Jeong has 6 years of industrial experience reverse
engineering nearly every type of interior and exterior electronic
automotive component as well as performing turbine blade modeling. Lee
has 6 years of industrial experience in reverse engineering all aspects
of the automotive industry, however, he specializes in car engines. All
engineers in GKS Korea have extensive experience with Imageware and
Geomagic software. GKS Korea engineers also use CATIA, UG, I-Deas and
Solidworks.
Laser scanning systems work by projecting
laser light onto surfaces while cameras continuously triangulate the
changing distance and profile of the laser as it sweeps along, enabling
the object to be accurately replicated. Laser scanners are able to
quickly measure large parts while generating far greater numbers of data
points than touch probes without the need for templates or fixtures.
Laser scanning can replicate the complete geometry of a complex part to
a high level of accuracy, often to within 1 thousandth of an inch.
Many companies are interested in taking
advantage of the improved accuracy and speed provided by laser scanning
but need to scan only a relatively small number of parts. Such companies
have difficulty justifying the cost of acquiring a laser scanner and
training operators in its use. GKS Inspection Services,
headquartered in Detroit with offices in Minneapolis, India, and now
Korea, offers outsourced laser scanning services on a project basis. By
simply sending a part to GKS, the company will create a very accurate
CAD model or inspection report in a short period of time at a reasonable
cost. Or, the company can dispatch trained metrologists to your
site using portable measuring devices.
GKS Inspection
Services has been a leading provider of dimensional measurement and 3D
laser scanning services for 25 years. The company’s Plymouth, MI
(Detroit area) lab is accredited by the A2LA for Mechanical Testing and
Calibration. Their Michigan lab features numerous CMMs, vision systems,
laser scanners, surface analyzers and other inspection equipment.
GKS also has branch offices in Minneapolis, India and Korea.
The company’s seasoned metrologists and engineers are experienced
in automotive and many other manufacturing industries.
