GKS Opens Laser Scanning and CAD Modeling Service Bureau in Pune, India

DETROIT, MI - GKS Inspection Services, a division of Laser Design Inc, announced that its recently-opened laser scanning and CAD modeling service bureau in India, GKS Inspection Services India Pvt LTD, has experienced such dramatic growth that it is already one of the largest such operations in India. “GKS India is an important part of GKS’ strategy of becoming the global leader in the 3D laser scanning services industry,” said Armando Alonso, Vice President. “GKS India enhances the competitiveness of our reverse engineering and CAD modeling services while also giving us entry into the fast-growing Indian manufacturing industry.”

GKS Inspection Services India Pvt LTD now consists of a team of 12 highly skilled engineers based in Pune providing reverse engineering and inspection services. The company is expanding rapidly and has plans to hire 10 more engineers in the next three months. As part of their 3D laser scanning expertise, the company’s engineers are highly skilled in creating surface models from the 3D scan data which is also referred to as a “point cloud”.  This process is known as reverse engineering. GKS India’s reverse engineering capabilities include creation of Class A surfaces as well as parametric models for all major CAD software programs.  GKS India also uses inspection software to create a color error deviation map that clearly delineates any variations between the as-built part and the design intent.

Avinash Ghorpade, Chief Designer for GKS India is a mechanical engineering graduate with 14 years of industrial experience. He worked with Ford Motor Company in the United Kingdom designing tooling. He also has experience in the sheet metal and plastics industries. Ghorpade has worked extensively with computer aided design software such as Unigraphics NX and I-DEAS, Imageware, and ICEMSURF.  Atul Gujar, Project Leader for GKS India, is a mechanical engineer with 6 years experience who has worked on nearly every type of interior and exterior automotive component, including plastics, castings and sheet metal stampings. He has worked with Imageware software for six years and in reverse engineering for two years.

Laser scanning systems work by projecting laser light onto surfaces while cameras continuously triangulate the changing distance and profile of the laser as it sweeps along, enabling the object to be accurately replicated. Laser scanners are able to quickly measure large parts while generating far greater numbers of data points than touch probes without the need for templates or fixtures. Laser scanning can replicate the complete geometry of a complex part to a high level of accuracy, often to within 1 thousandth of an inch.

Many companies are interested in taking advantage of the improved accuracy and speed provided by laser scanning but need to scan only a relatively small number of parts. Such companies have difficulty justifying the cost of acquiring a laser scanner and training operators in its use. GKS Inspection Services, headquartered in Detroit with offices in Minneapolis and now India, offers outsourced laser scanning services on a project basis. By simply sending a part to GKS, the company will create a very accurate CAD model or inspection report in a short period of time at a reasonable cost.  Or, the company can dispatch trained metrologists to your site using portable measuring devices.

GKS Inspection Services has been a leading provider of dimensional measurement and 3D laser scanning services for 25 years.  The company’s Plymouth, MI (Detroit area) lab is accredited by the A2LA for Mechanical Testing and Calibration.  Their Michigan lab features numerous CMMs, vision systems, laser scanners, surface analyzers and other inspection equipment.  GKS also has branch offices in Minneapolis, India and Korea.  The company’s seasoned metrologists and engineers are experienced in automotive and many other manufacturing industries.
