DETROIT, MI -
GKS Inspection Services, a global provider
of dimensional measurement and 3D laser scanning services, has purchased
a fourth Faro Platinum portable-CMM articulated arm to once again
increase the capacity of its Detroit-area dimensional inspection
services. By adding two new Faro arms in less than six months, GKS, a
division of Laser Design Inc., has been able to keep pace with the
expanding customer demand for portable on-site scanning,
inspection and reverse engineering services.

The new 12-foot Platinum
Faro arm is fully integrated with both a touch probe and a Laser Design
3D laser scanner. GKS’ system configuration includes Faro’s CAM2
measurement software and contact probes along with a Laser Design
SLP-330 laser scanner and a high-end laptop PC, loaded with Geomagic
software. Also, by switching in the SLP-2000 high-speed laser probe
with a 8” (200 mm) long laser line and dual CMOS receptors, GKS can
quickly and accurately scan larger parts at a customer site, thus
lowering the chances of having a part damaged in shipping and
eliminating the shipping charges themselves.
The
dual receptors reduce the number of scanning passes because they capture
much more part geometry per pass than single receptor laser probes.
Steve DeRemer, General
Manager of GKS Michigan states, “With the addition of another portable
Faro arm, our expert technicians can travel all over the world to
perform measurement and laser scanning services. Many of our customers
prefer on-site inspection of their parts due to their large size or
proprietary nature and now we will have this added capacity to service
them in a timely manner.”
GKS Inspection Services
also has a full-sized cargo van at its disposal for transporting its
employees to customer sites for on-site scanning projects. “Reliability
to our customers is our goal and providing reliable transportation for
our technicians will facilitate our timeliness and scheduling,” remarked
DeRemer.
Jim Andrews, Supervisor
of Engineering Services at GKS Michigan, added, “While we have offered
on-site inspection services for many years, we are now seeing growing
demand for on-site reverse engineering services as well.
In some cases, it is possible to
travel to the customer site, laser scan a part, and create a surface
model without the part or the data ever leaving the customer site.”
GKS Inspection Services
has been a leading provider of dimensional measurement and 3D laser
scanning services for 25 years. The company’s Plymouth, MI lab (in the
Detroit area) is accredited by the A2LA for Mechanical Testing and
Calibration. The Michigan lab features numerous CMMs, vision systems,
3D laser scanners, surface analyzers and other inspection equipment.
GKS also has branch offices in Minneapolis, Toledo, India, and Korea.
The company’s expert metrologists and engineers are experienced in
automotive and many other manufacturing industries.
